“Work” and “study” are among the most common IELTS Speaking Part 1 topics, and most candidates will be asked questions about one or both.

IELTS Speaking Part 1: Work & Study Overview
In Part 1, the examiner wants to see how naturally you can talk about your daily life.
Work and study questions test:
- Fluency (how smoothly you speak)
- Ability to explain routines and preferences
- Basic vocabulary related to education and jobs
Key things to remember:
- Keep answers natural, not memorised
- Speak for 2–3 sentences
- Always give a reason or example

You may be asked:

- Why did you choose your job?

- What is your typical working day like?

Band 7–8 Sample Answers (Work)
Question: What do you do for work?
Sample Answer:
I currently work as a teacher, mainly helping students improve their English skills. It’s quite a rewarding job because I enjoy seeing my students make progress over time.
Why this is Band 7+:
- Clear description
- Adds detail
- Includes a reason
Question: Do you enjoy your work?
Sample Answer:
Yes, I do. I find it quite interesting because every day is different, and I get the chance to interact with a wide range of people.
Why this works:

- Uses natural vocabulary
- Sounds conversational
Question: What is your typical working day like?
Sample Answer:
My typical day usually starts in the morning, and I spend most of my time teaching classes and preparing lessons. In the afternoon, I often review student work or plan future activities.

Common IELTS Study Questions
If you are a student, you may be asked:
- What do you study?
- Why did you choose this subject?
- Do you enjoy your studies?
- What is your favourite subject?
- What do you plan to do in the future?
Band 7–8 Sample Answers (Study)
Question: What do you study?
Sample Answer:
I’m currently studying business management at university. It covers a wide range of topics, including marketing, finance, and leadership.
Question: Why did you choose this subject?
Sample Answer:
I chose this subject because I’m interested in how businesses operate, and I think it will give me more career opportunities in the future.
Question: Do you enjoy your studies?
Sample Answer:
Yes, I do, although some parts are quite challenging. Overall, I find it interesting, especially when we work on practical projects.
How to Extend Your Answers (Band 7 Technique)
Many candidates give answers that are too short.
Weak answer:
“I study business.”
Better answer:
“I study business because I’m interested in how companies grow and develop. For example, I recently learned about marketing strategies.”
Simple Structure to Follow
Answer → Reason → Example
This is enough to reach Band 7 for fluency.
Useful Vocabulary for Work & Study
Common Mistakes (Band 6 Problems)
1. Very short answers
Always extend slightly
2. Memorised answers
Speak naturally
3. No explanation
Always include “because”
4. Overusing simple vocabulary
Add 1–2 better words (e.g. “rewarding”, “challenging”)
